How we rank software

Every list has exactly nine tools, each one tried hands-on. Here is how we pick them, test them and keep them up to date.

Every list on Top9Software answers one question: which nine tools are worth your time for this job? We stop at nine so you can compare the best options in one sitting instead of scrolling through fifty.

We try every tool

Each tool gets a real trial: setup, daily use and support. We sign up like a normal customer, run the tool with a small test team and note where it helps and where it gets in the way. Prices are checked against the vendor’s own pricing page, and every price shows the date we checked it.

We score each list on criteria for that job

A leave tracker and a password manager need different things, so every list has its own six criteria. You will find them in the “How we tested” section of each list.

We say who should skip a tool

Every review has a “Choose it if” and a “Skip it if”. A tool can be excellent and still wrong for your team, and we would rather tell you before you sign up.

Vendors can pay for a featured placement. When they do, the listing is marked “Sponsored” everywhere it appears. Payment never changes an editorial rank, and a listing request never changes a rank without a new review. Read our advertising disclosure for the details.

Every list is dated

Software changes fast. Each list shows when it was last reviewed, and we recheck lists every two weeks.
